Calgon Carbon Awarded Contract to Remove NDMA

PITTSBURGH, PA -- January 7, 1999 -- Calgon Carbon Corporation announced today that it has been awarded a contract from Suburban Water Systems of Covina, California, for a Rayox® Tower to destroy N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in water from one of its wells that has been shut down since NDMA was detected earlier this year. The installation is also being supported by Southern California Edison under its Showcase Opportunity and Economic Kilowatt Incentive programs. The contract is valued at $565,000.

The Rayox® Tower, which will utilize Calgon Carbon's proprietary, high-power, ultraviolet (UV) lamps, will treat approximately 3,000 gallons of water per minute and reduce the concentration of NDMA from 90 parts per trillion to less than 2 parts per trillion. The system is scheduled for delivery in the second quarter of 1999.

A suspected carcinogen, NDMA is often associated with the use of liquid rocket fuel and the manufacture of rubber or certain chemical intermediates. NDMA has been found in a number of groundwater aquifers in Canada and the U.S., and in recent years, improved analytical testing methods have permitted the detection of NDMA in low concentrations in drinking water.

Commenting on Calgon Carbon's expertise in destroying NDMA, John Mickler, managing director of Calgon Carbon's Advanced Oxidation Technologies group, said, "Our high-power UV lamps have proven to be very effective in destroying waterborne NDMA. Over the past nine years, Calgon Carbon has installed more than 10 Rayox® systems for the destruction of NDMA in groundwater, drinking water, industrial wastewater, and rocket washwater."

Calgon Carbon Corporation is a leader in the production, supply and design of products, services, and technologies for the purification, separation, and concentration of liquids and gases.
