Calgon Carbon Awarded Contract for Sentinel UV Disinfection
System For Drinking Water
PITTSBURGH, PA October 4, 1999 Calgon Carbon Corporation
announced today that it has been awarded a contract to provide the
world's first full-scale UV system specifically designed to provide
protection against cryptosporidium and giardia in drinking water.
Calgon Carbon, in conjunction with the City of Grosse Pointe Farms,
will install a Sentinel UV Disinfection System at the Grosse
Pointe Farms Water Treatment Plant in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan,
as an additional treatment technique to ensure safe drinking water for
its residents. The system, which is scheduled to be on-line during the
first quarter of 2000, can treat 14 million gallons of water per
day.
Sentinel's medium-pressure lamps achieve more than 99.9% inactivation
of cryptosporidium and giardia at a fraction of the cost of other
treatment methods. In addition, operating costs are far less than
conventional disinfection methods. Darrel Schuurman, water
superintendent for the City of Grosse Pointe Farms commented, "Our
consulting engineer from Snell Environmental Group, Inc., John
O'Malia, recommended that we choose Sentinel over membrane and ozone
systems because of its high performance standards and both lower
capital and operating costs. Also, unlike other technologies, Sentinel
does not produce disinfection by-products. The system is compact, easy
to install, and has a flexible design for easy retrofitting into our
existing system."
Earlier this year, Sentinel became the first product to receive
verification under the U.S. EPA's ETV Package Drinking Water Treatment
Systems pilot. The verification, backed by both the U.S. EPA and NSF
International, offers water utility managers and state regulatory
officials a uniform method for assessing product performance
claims.
Gary Van Stone, executive director of municipal market development at
Calgon Carbon Corporation, said, "Grosse Pointe Farms has taken a
leadership position in the U.S. by choosing to provide its citizens
with an additional water treatment technique that is not mandated by
law. We are pleased to have the opportunity to work with the City of
Grosse Pointe Farms on this project."
Calgon Carbon Corporation, headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,
is a global leader in the production, supply, and design of products,
services, and technologies for making air and water cleaner and
safer. The company employs 1,100 people with 11 facilities in six
countries and 12 sales offices serving customers worldwide.
