Calgon Carbon's ISEP® Becomes First System to Receive
California Department of Health Services Approval Acceptance for
Treating Perclorate and Nitrate in Drinking Water
PITTSBURGH, PA February 1, 2000 Calgon Carbon
Corporation is delighted to announce that it has received the
California Department of Health Services approval acceptance of its
ISEP® continuous ion exchange system for treatment of perchlorate
and nitrate for drinking water distribution. ISEP® is the first
system for perchlorate treatment that has received this
endorsement.
"Before rendering our decision, the Department's Surface Water
Treatment Rule Committee extensively reviewed ISEP®'s performance
in pilot work," explained Richard H. Sakaji, Ph.D., PE, senior
sanitation sanitary engineer for the California Department of Health
Services. The committee also noted that, "ISEP® has been
successfully applied in nitrate removal applications locally and
outside California. The investigation of the committee concluded that
ISEP® has clearly demonstrated its ability to remove perchlorates
from source waters to acceptable levels."
"Calgon Carbon is proud to provide the first system to receive the
California Department of Health Services approval for treating
perchlorate and nitrate in drinking water," said Charles Drewry,
Senior Technical Sales Representative at Calgon Carbon
Corporation. "Utilities seeking an effective, reliable method for
treating perchlorate and nitrate can implement ISEP® with greater
confidence as a result of this technology acceptance," added
Drewry.
Calgon Carbon Corporation also announced that it has completed
development and testing of an ISEP® brine recovery module (BRM)
that destroys perchlorate and nitrate in waste brine. The addition of
the BRM allows 90% or more of the brine to be reused and significantly
reduces operating costs by destroying the perchlorate and nitrate
on-site. BRM will soon be submitted to the California Department of
Health Services for its review.
