Calgon Carbon Awarded $800,000 Contract for UV Disinfection System for Drinking Water

PITTSBURGH, PA — December 13, 2001 — Calgon Carbon Corporation announced today that it has received an $800,000 contract from EPCOR to supply a Sentinel™; UV Disinfection System for the E.L. Smith drinking water treatment Plant in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Sentinel will utilize Calgon Carbon's patented ultra violet (UV) light technology to inactivate cryptosporidium and other pathogens that could pose a health threat to the citizens of Edmonton. The Sentinel system will treat up to 95-million gallons of water per day.

Calgon Carbon has patented the application of low-energy UV light for the inactivation of cryptosporidium, and water producers can use the technology under a license agreement with the company.

Commenting on the contract, Robert P. O'Brien, senior vice president of Calgon Carbon, said, "We are extremely pleased that another major water supplier has chosen our Sentinel UV System to provide the ultimate level of protection against cryptosporidium and other waterborne pathogens that could pose a serious health threat."
