Calgon Carbon Corporation Is Awarded The Mannheim UV Disinfection Contract

PITTSBURGH, PA - August 5, 2002- Calgon Carbon Corporation (CCC) is pleased to announce today that the Engineering Solutions Group has secured a supplier contract providing the UV Disinfection Equipment for the Mannheim Water Treatment Plant.

The Mannheim Facility was designed to treat the Grand River Source Water servicing the escalating water requirements of the Regional Municipality of Waterloo. The Regional Municipality of Waterloo provides the drinking water for southwestern Ontario Canada. This plant was initially designed to treat approximately 19 million gallons of water per day, and has used an Ozone system that the facility has rapidly outgrown, in recent years, because of various cryptosporidium outbreaks in North America. The facility has upgraded their plant, including their ozone equipment to progress from a primary disinfection philosophy, to a multi barrio treatment philosophy. After thorough investigation of UV Technology as a means to inactivate cryptosporidium and giardia, including a detailed pilot study, it became apparent to plant engineers that Medium Pressure as a primary barrier is an appropriate and reliable technology. Calgon Carbon was contracted to provide two (2) Sentinel™ 48" diameter reactors incorporating six (6) 20kW lamps. UV was then followed by post chlorination as a secondary barrier.

Dave DesRochers, Calgon Carbon's regional sales manager, states: "Calgon Carbon's experience with the high powered medium pressure lamps, along with existing similar sized installations made us the supplier of choice for Mannheim Water Treatment Plant. This requirement for validated units at high flow rates was of key importance in the selection criteria. The client felt comfortable with Calgon Carbon's history, and successes with larger reactors. They were confident that Calgon Carbon would be capable of accomplishing this system upgrade safely and economically."
