Community and Business Leaders Attend Start-Up of the United
States' Largest UV Disinfection System at West View Water's Neville
Island Treatment Plant
PITTSBURGH, April 19, 2001 Today, more than 150 community and
industry leaders, including drinking water professionals, federal,
state and local elected officials, attended the official start-up of
the Sentinel&153; UV Disinfection System at the West View Water Treatment
Plant on Neville Island. The newly installed Sentinel system is the
largest UV disinfection system for municipal drinking water treatment
in the United States, and the first of its kind in Pennsylvania for
surface water treatment.
The Sentinel system, from Calgon Carbon Corporation, uses ultraviolet
(UV) light to provide a cost-effective barrier against viruses,
bacteria and parasites including cryptosporidium and
giardia. Sentinel is an environmentally safe system that operates at a
fraction of the cost of other treatment methods.
The start-up was another historic milestone for West View Water
Authority, which has a 57+ year tradition of being a progressive and
innovative provider of safe, high-quality drinking water. The
authority provides drinking water to approximately 200,000 residents
in 30 communities in Allegheny and Butler counties.
William Wunderly, West View Water Authority's Chairman of the Board of
Directors, highlighting the security provided by the system, said "the
Sentinel system provides peace of mind for our 30 service communities
who no longer have to worry about cryptosporidium and giardia, the
potentially deadly microscopic organisms that threaten people with
suppressed immune systems, such as children, the elderly and those who
are ill."
"The selection and installation of the state-of-the-art Sentinel
system continues West View Water Authority's proud tradition of being
a true, proactive leader committed to delivering high-quality water to
our roughly 200,000 customers," said Dan Daugherty, Executive Director
of the authority.
According to Bob O'Brien, Senior Vice President of Calgon Carbon, "as
a Pittsburgh-based company, Calgon Carbon is extremely proud to
install the largest UV System in the United States, and the first in
Pennsylvania, here in our own backyard at West View Water. Given our
respective histories of being true innovators, this was a natural
partnership for Calgon Carbon and West View Water. The fact that the
benefits of the Sentinel system will be realized here in the
Pittsburgh region only adds to our enthusiasm for this
project."
West View Water Authority, located on Neville Island, was established
in 1942. The authority purifies drinking water, which it provides to
approximately 200,000 residents and commercial businesses in 30
communities in Allegheny and Butler counties, including three
hospitals as well as numerous nursing homes and child care
centers.
Calgon Carbon Corporation (NYSE: CCC) is a global leader in services
and solutions for making air and water safer and cleaner and for
purifying food, beverage, and industrial process
streams. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Calgon Carbon employs
approximately 1,000 people at 13 carbon manufacturing, reactivation,
